KUALA LUMPUR – An application will be made to have Muafakat Nasional (MN) registered as an official political entity, announced Umno and PAS today, with the parties reiterating their vow to cooperate in the next general election.

“The MN leadership has come to a mutual agreement to commit to and strengthen the unity and cooperation between our two parties in preparation for the 15th general election,” said a joint statement by the alliance’s secretaries-general, Tan Sri Annuar Musa and Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan.

“The leadership of both parties has agreed to officially register MN with the Registrar of Societies.”

They added that an MN meeting scheduled for last night was postponed due to the conditional movement control order.

However, The Vibes reported that PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad and Umno Youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki were among those seen leaving meeting venue Putra World Trade Centre here at 11.10pm.

Umno and PAS’ commitment to each other signals another blow to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration.

Previously, Umno leaders had clamoured for more government positions and made public their unhappiness with the Bersatu president. PAS, however, has generally kept quiet.

Political pundits believe that the Islamist party is hedging its bets, as this is its first time holding federal power.

Umno, meanwhile, has threatened to pull support for PN, which, if realised, will see Muhyiddin losing his razor-thin majority and ousted. – The Vibes, October 20, 2020
